I am Gershom Asim-Ita, Pastor of Christ Embassy, Cape Verde.
My Family background, educational background, etc;
I was born into a Christian family in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria. I am the third child and last boy with two elder brothers and a younger sister.
According to my parents, my birth was symbolic, as I was given birth to with a little bit of grey hair in a part of my head. My mum also told me that while the Doctor was trying to cut the umbilical cord, l actually held on to the scissors I was delivered with.
I was calm as a toddler and enjoyed being alone in a corner of the house but this changed as I grew older. I became rough and restless, though I was still brilliant.
I was involved in church activities such as the Boy’s Brigade because my parents were very committed members in church. We attended an orthodox church and I can't remember us vividly missing any Sunday service. My father would organise quiz competition for my siblings and I some Sunday afternoons, after which he rewarded us accordingly. We dare not forget the memory verse of any Scripture that was taught at the Sunday school as we were beaten and our lunch reduced if any of us couldn't remember the memory verse or what was taught. He was well known in church, so getting feedbacks from our Sunday school teachers was easy.
My father passed on in October, 1999 after a severe illness. It looked like our world had ended and to some we were history as they wondered how my mum would cope with four soldiers, my younger sister being classified as a male in the midst of three boys.
I was tagged the black sheep of the family because I did things my siblings didn't do, such as organizing and attending parties, drinking, smoking and womanizing from my late teenage years. I went as far as using the cash given to me by my mum to pay for (NEPA) utility bills to buy designer T- Shirts because I didn't want to look or be tagged inferior by my peers. It became bad to the extent that I stopped attending church service on Sunday mornings and would rather join my friends in the neighborhood to play basketball at the University of Lagos Sports Complex. This became a serious concern to my mum and siblings, they talked to me severally but I wouldn't just see reasons with them. I sometimes wondered why I was so different from my siblings due to the life I chose to live and the fact that I was the only child given a biblical name made it even more confusing.
During these periods, I had been to different churches for various programs and youth camp meetings but my purpose for attending wasn't to be blessed and learn about God but because I was invited by a friend or the other. This was still under peer or youthful pressure.
My salvation story, how it all started;
I got into the Higher Institution in 2001, the University of Lagos to be precise and it was during this period I had three near-death incidents that would have taken my life but on each occasion, God rescued me supernaturally. Apparently, my mum had been interceding for me all these while, due to the fact that she thought I was her only problem and would cause her pain and disgrace. On different occasions when I went into her room, I would find her in tears praying to God. Now I understand so well the power of intercession because I was almost initiated into a secret cult during this time and just when I was about to fill the initiation form, my mum called and asked that I return home.
On getting home she called me into her room and told me emphatically that I would lose my life if I joined that secret society I was planning to. And even if I didn’t, that I was never going to come out of it.
In my final year, a childhood friend invited me to a Christ Embassy Church not too far from the house we stayed at the time. He was also invited by a friend in the neighborhood but I guess he had attended some services and was blessed and so he thought I would be blessed too. Ostensibly, my acceptance to attend the service with my friend that day was the game changer. That was the day I confessed the Lordship of Jesus Christ openly and felt a relief in my spirit after the service. That was the day I became free and never missed any service afterwards. I got really committed to the work of God and the following year 2007, I was sent out as an assistant coordinator to start a new church.
My journey thus far;
Since then, I have been ascending in glory, in my personal life and also in spiritual responsibilities, changing destinies around the world and making many candidates of Heaven. This is what the Holy Spirit can do in a man's life, indeed it's something more than gold.
My parting words or words of encouragement to those who are currently undergoing what l went through before l gave my life to Jesus Christ;
I would encourage mothers especially to intercede for their children mostly when they're headed on the wrong part in life or involved in bad habits. My mother's prayers made a difference in my life. Don't pray for them to have money or wealth but rather to know and serve God, for in this are untold riches, peace and prosperity.
If you're reading this and you haven't confessed the Lordship of Jesus Christ over your life openly, then what are you waiting for? Now is the time of salvation, stop asking for another day or opportunity as tomorrow is not promised. Do it now, it's the best decision one could ever make in this life.
For my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, keep the faith alive, keep fighting the good fight. This is the best kind of life, life without Christ is empty. Be very strong and courageous as your reward is sure and can't be compared to anything in this world. May the Holy Spirit strengthen you for the days ahead, God bless you richly!
