What is tithe? Your tithe is the 10% of your income, not 9%. Even 9.9% is not acceptable unto God. It’s a commandment from God that we pay our tithe. In the book of Malachi 3:8-12, the Bible says, “Should people cheat God, yet you have cheated me. “But you ask, “what do you mean, when did we ever cheat you? ’You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. The instruction here is simple, He simply says, “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my temple. If you do, say the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of Heavens for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! Your crops will be abundant, for I will guide them from insects and diseases. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
From the bible verses, we see that anyone robbing God of His tithe and offering is on a curse, and if you obey His commandment and do as Malachi 3:10 says, there will be abundance in your home. The truth is, it takes only one fellow in the congregation who will not pay his tithe and Offering to open the doors of danger to the church, just as any pastor who does not pay his tithe will only be bringing danger to the rest of his congregation. So now, you see the danger of not paying your tithe. Your disobedience wouldn’t just be affecting you greatly, but it affects your whole generation and those around you. Anyone who claims to be a Christian but does not pay his tithe is only deceiving himself. There will be no robber in heaven. Anyone who calls himself a pastor and does not pay his tithe, if he had been a born again before, he is only a backslider. Paying of the tithe is very important. Pay your tithe first and you can do any other.
Today, many of us seem to coat the words of Matthew 23:23 wrongly and use it as a cover-up. You should pay your tithe, consider the matters of judgment. In other words, anyone who does not pay his tithe is not going to heaven. Now, let me take you back to the book of Genesis, and show you what brought problems to the world in the Garden of Eden is, because God said to Adam, “Every tree in this garden, you are free to eat, but that tree in the middle shouldn’t be touched. But then, Eve said, “that tree that belongs to God, we would eat it all, we wouldn’t leave it for Him”, which simply means that whenever you refuse to pay your tithe, you are taking that which belongs to God and you are only laying a curse on yourself like Adam and Eve did on themselves, and you will be chased out of the garden.
Now, let me quickly tell you a story I was told by my General Overseer. It’s the vision of a man that went to hell. In this vision, this man in question went on picking up other men in hell, looking at their faces one by one and dropping them. Then one man asked him, what are you looking for and he said he was looking for his pastor. And the man was like, why would you be looking for your pastor in hell. And he said, “Anyone who took you to hell cannot make it to heaven”. And then, out of curiosity, the man asked him, how is he the one responsible for bringing you here. Then the man said, “This is simply because he didn’t teach me how to tithe”. He knew about it and he didn’t tell me and I know he is also here somewhere because the Bible makes us understand that if you fail to teach the next man something you had the opportunity to do and it eventually stands against him, it will be held against you and judged by it. So let’s not forget to do the right things at the right time because that might be all that matters to change the situation of things and prevent future regrets. Anyways, like I said earlier, failed tithing isn’t just about you, but only brings problems on the rest of the church. So what are we going to do?
First of all, you will no longer just tell the people to pay their tithe and expect them to just go to the box and drop it. The devil will not allow it. Ask them to dance forward with their tithe and drop it. You can tell them to drop their offering on their seat, but they should dance forward to drop their tithe. Tithing shouldn’t be done in the secret but should be carried out in the open. Let them dance forward and let the whole congregation see them. Those that are used to forgetting will no longer forget. Now, let me conclude by saying God is sufficient for our past, our present and our future. He is sufficient for the kingdom to come and sufficient for our joy. It is possible for God to be for us, against us and with us, just as it is also possible for Him to be neutral, and that means serious trouble when God is neutral. A curse is summoned to all forces in heaven and on earth to work against somebody, to resist somebody and to fight somebody until he is totally destroyed. You can check that out in the book of Deuteronomy 28:23-24. It’s a dangerous thing to have a curse on your head. And as we all know, if our parent curses us, our pastor can remove that curse because he is a carrier of a higher anointing. But if God curses you, to whom will you run?
It’s a dangerous thing to rob God for you are only bringing a curse upon yourself. Don’t rob God of what duly belongs to Him. Don’t be like the Israelites who were disobedient and couldn’t obey simple instructions given to them after God gave them victory at Jericho. God asked them not to touch the gold but they went on to do the exact opposite and we all know how the story ends. Stop robbing God, it's a very dangerous thing to do. You can’t take what belongs to God and expect Him to fold His hands and watch. Even if He doesn’t act, you are automatically bringing a curse upon yourself. Paying your tithe is the best thing you can ever do for yourself and to the church in general. Teach it to your congregation but before you begin to teach it, restitute your own ways and practice what you preach. When you are less busy or better still, in one of your quiet times, I want you to open your Bibles to the book of John chapter 17 and read it, and hear the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s your business to help those you are leading. As a pastor, you must do all you can to ensure your people make it to heaven and have a fulfilled life. Do whatever you have to do for your people to prosper, and may the Almighty continue to give us the grace that will be sufficient for us to yield to His commandment and not just be hearers of His Word, but be doers of His Word in Jesus name.
