“I dumped the worldly Rap music last year and embraced Gospel Rap music, giving up the quest for being famous, the glitz and glamour to live a real life and use my talent for something more meaningful, which is the Gospel of Jesus and the journey has been worthwhile” - Obibility
I'm Obibi John, an urban Gospel rapper from Delta state. I was born and brought up in Ogun state, where I had my primary and secondary school education. Growing up in Ogun state, Omu Ijebu to be precise was tough and being a child of a subsistence agricultural farmer, sometimes I had to go to the farm early in the morning before going to school and hawk in the streets when I closed from school in the afternoon, I could recall I hawked tomatoes, fish and yam even at the age of 18 and being a farmer in the village, I used traps in killing a lot of bushmeat for our consumption and because of that, my dad named me a great hunter… Smile!
I moved to Lagos in 2007 after I finished my secondary school and proceeded to Lagos State Polytechnic where I got a National Diploma in Business Administration.
As regards my salvation story, I was brought up by a Christian parent so I was thought how to pray, fast, go to Church and deny ungodly attitude right from my childhood days but Jesus became so real to me last year at a concert tagged 'GOD OF BAD BOYZ', that was when I can really say I got saved. Christianity became something I wanted to live the rest of my life for because I had come to know Christ personally, it was no more about what I was taught growing up, I had come to understand that God invested so much in me to get me redeemed by putting the life of Christ on the line for my sake and that of the world, now I so much cherish Christ's death and resurrection, and that is what I live for and that's what I talk about in my music because that's where the power of salvation lies.
I dumped the worldly rap music last year and embraced Gospel rap music, giving up the quest for being famous, the glitz and glamour to live a real life and use my talent for something more meaningful, which is the Gospel of Jesus and the journey has been worthwhile, my music got bigger when I started projecting Jesus compared to when I was projecting myself (Secular music) and there's wider acceptability for my Rap music now that I'm into Gospel rap. I feel blessed and fulfilled being God's vessel and glad I'm fulfilling divine purpose because my music is blessing lives.
The best success anyone out there can record is to be in Christ Jesus because anything that's not everlasting isn't worth living for. Your sins have already been paid for by Jesus, believing and confessing His name is the pass to heaven. God bless!
